April 11, 2012 Indonesia Tsunami Alert Issued

The aftershock 8.2 earthquake that was reported Wednesday, April 11, 2012, from Sumatra Island of Indonesia, has prompted government officials to issue another tsunami warnings for western coast of Sumatra island and the Mentawai islands.

The temblor occurred nearly three hours later after the 8.6 magnitude quake. The U.S. Geological Survey said the first 8.6-magnitude quake was centered 20 miles (33 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor around 269 miles (434 kilometers) from Aceh province.

In 2004, a tsunami hit Aceh and other provinces that killed 230,000 people, most of them in Aceh, is still fresh in the memories of the residents in the affected areas today.

Residents in six provinces along the country's west coast of Thailand, including Phuket, Krabi and Phang-Nga, were ordered to evacuate in fear of huge tsunami.

In Tamil Nadu in southern India, police cordoned off the beach and used loudspeakers to warn people to leave the area, according to a report of Associated Press.
